Downstream of Redbarn, Foxdenton is another culverted
section of one of the River Irk's many small tributary brooks. It runs across
what was once the estate of Foxdenton Hall, hence the name. The culvert likley
dates from the 1920 - 30s and runs under a sewage treatment works, immediately after which it
receives a vastly increased amonut of flow as the treated water is emptied into its course.
Beneath the works there are some interesting features, side passages leading off to modern concrete
stepped chambers, an access stairway with no cover allows you to walk back above ground and sees you coming out into the
middle of the treatment works.
This is another spot from yester-year, we spent many a school lunch break daring eath other to
see who would go furthest down the tunnel without a torch. At that time nobody ever got far
enough to discover what on earth the monsterous booming noise (the treated water emptying ino the culvert)
was, but it is pretty well pitch black by that point without a torch! On our recent trip we
didn't manage anything much picture wise, and so until we return it's the no pictures monkeys.
